VMware on Kubuntu 8.4
Sadly, VMware isn’t the all-around user friendly software that we’d want it to be. So how do you install VMware on Kubuntu 8.4? A brand new unsupported system? Simple:
- download the tarballs (currently: VMware-server-1.0.4-56528.tar.gz and VMware-mui-1.0.4-56528.tar.gz),
- Extract both to their own folders
- Run install.pl as root
- Answer it’s questions
- Wait for it to crash at compile on your nifty new AMD64 system.
Solution? Go here: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1623
Download the vmware-any-any-update115.tar.gz vmware-any-any-update116.tar.gz patch. This patch works magic. Extract it and run “runme.pl” as root. It does all the footwork for you.
Update: Originally posted that there was a 115 patch, but it seems that 116 is the newest. Sorry for the mixup.
Good luck and happy VM’ing.

What really annoys me about software is when they try to make it out to be something OH so great and when you actually try it it ends up just waisting your time. Now, I’m all for new handy dandy software, pretty interfaces, shiny updates and anything that’s new … but I’m sorry FF 3, so far you don’t make my cut.
First and foremost, let me start out with the interface. It feels A LOT better than the old firefox. I don’t know what they did, but even though I didn’t like FF3 so far I just feel like I’m missing so much by not using it. It just ‘felt’ that much better. Very crisp, homily and down to earth. I liked it … except for how it looked. Yes I’m a geek and I could have easily fixed that, but I’m tired of customizing this and customizing that … I just want something that works (No, I won’t get a Mac [and yes, I already have one hooked up to my piano]).

Like everyone who travels, you know you’re bound to forget something at least once. Well, this time I managed to forget something big: my laptops power cord. Like the American who is addicted to late night TV and bad sitcoms, I’m addicted to tea and computers. I could give up the computers, but not without a good reason.
Being on a business trip is definitely NOT a good place to forget something too. Most of my work will be done via laptop and even with two batteries I’d have at most 6 hours and 30 minutes of typing text time (at the lowest possible screen brightness of course). That is unacceptable; many contracts are on here, business e-mails to answers, deals to research and all the usual goodies.
So what to do when your power strapped in a alien city with plenty of new age stores around? First thought that came to my mind that is probably in most cities: Best Buy!
