Singapore Airlines, Oh How Much I Love You!
Like many of you I have some decent flying wings. I’ve flown with many of the United States airlines (local and major) and several of the international airlines, though out of everything so far Singapore Airlines tops them all.
So why Singapore Airlines? Simple, no matter what YOU (the client) come first. Even in Economy class you feel better than in almost all other airlines. Business class is truly world class and their first class (and suites) are breathtakingly amazing (and also priced at the value of a small cheap car). Not matter where you sit though, you are always treated with the utmost respect unlike `other’ airlines we all have flown with (yes, I am taking about YOU Airlines in the USA).
Let’s get down to the nitty gritty details of why they truly are a top Airline in the world. Let’s start with SQ’s fleet. They have 5 or 6 types of aircraft. Their fleet consists of both Airbus’s and Boeing’s. In the recent years, due to the economic reccession, SQ went the OTHER route when it came to keeping profits up. Guess what they did? They made their service and aircraft ever better! Not worse!
SQ’s fleet sports 10 Airbus A380’s with several (7 I think) on order; many Boeing 773’s (both normal and ER). Though I do not remember what other aircraft they have, all are rather new or at least retrofitted (and remade like new). Their current refitting project, estimated to finish in December 2009, brings many many new levels of luxury to all levels. All classes: Suite, 1st, Business and Economy have interactive TV screens, pretty good food and well designed seating. The Economy class has a small 10in screen (small, but usable), Business class: 15.4in (or was it 15?), 1st class has a 23in screen and the Suite’s have something much bigger though I do not remember what at the moment.
Suite class has a whole room to themselves. Full reclining bed, big screen, plenty of space, the works. 1st class has what amounts to a high class Lazy boy chair all for themselves and World class service and a whole lot of everything (even a ‘real’ full meal!). Business class has all Designer leather seating, some seat’s are “50% wider than any other airlines” seats (or so they claim). All of the class just mentioned are all ‘designer’ designed … again, I forgot who. I do remember though, that the Suite and 1st class (probably) have real wood trim! As for economy class, it’s a seat with a tv screen
Nothing special at all, but at least it’s actually decently comfy.
TV! The TV system on the flight is not next gen persay. Though it is a damn good system, slow, but good. Even in economy class you have access to well over 10 full length feature films (as of this writing some of the movies included: Terminator I and II, Ong Bok II, 2 Fast 2 Furious, and several others including the new film … <something> Moonacre), many video games, plenty of TV shows, and some well chosen music. All this at the (slow) touch of the wired controller.
Though as I mentioned, the system is a bit slow and laggy. So you will have to wait a second or two (or three) before it responds to your command sometimes. This only happens when you try browsing for stuff, changing volume/brightness/ect is ‘normal’ speed.
Now onto the penultimate category: Food! One word: amazing. On a short flight from Bali to Singapore (2 hours and 35 minutes) they serve a wonderful full meal. Real meat, real potatoes, real veggies. Tastes rather good too! Business class and up of course get better food, though the econ class food is still rather darn good. You have plenty of choices for your food as well. Beef + potatoes was mine. The other choice that I heard, while not paying attention at all, was chicken and rice.
Last but not least: Noise … SQ is currently, with the retrofitting project, working on making their aircraft quieter. Very nice idea for them. Their new A380’s are all VERY well made and designed as they are made for ‘quiet’ … as quiet a large jet could be. Overall pretty good.
Final verdict: It is now my favorite airline ![]()
Good going Singapore Airlines! If I can I will fly with you when I have the choice (and it’s cheap enough)
