That’s right my friends, the iPhone 3.0 firmware is jailbreakable (no surprise) AND unlocked! Yup, you read it correct. The iPhone 3.0 firmware is fully unlocked so you can use it with any carrier you wish in any way you want (more or less). The iPhone Dev Team really did a number for us this time. Shortly after 3.0 release they have it down.
All the credit doesn’t go to the Dev Team though. The maker of the original 2.2 and 2.2.1 (sort of) unlock software yellowsn0w has introduced UltraSnow. UltraSnow, like it’s predecesor yellowsnow unlocks the firmware for you. Gizmodo has a detailed guide on how to do so here. It’s not complicated at all. Here as the simplified steps:
- Plug in iphone
- Update iTunes to 8.2
- Update iPhone through iTunes. I did it this way because it guarentees a clean update without issues. Though, you might lose some data so make sure you have a backup you can restore (data restore, but FULL restore) from later.
- After update, turn OFF the iPhone.
- With iPhone OFF and plugged in, turn on refsn0w. Point redsnow to the files it needs (3.0 ipsw and the two bootloader files).
- Follow instructions on the redsnow screen about how to put iphone into recovery mode (and stuff).
- Get tea and enjoy unlocked iphone
One huge tip I recommend, this was a problem in the past. I’m not sure it is one currently though. BEFORE unlocking put the new sim card into the iPhone and jailbreak/unlock with it in the iPhone.
One other solution is to use QuickPwn. Their blog recently changed and are not followers of redsn0w as well. Be sure to check it out as well.
Don’t forget: redsn0w to jailbreak, Ultrasnow to unlock. And UltraSnow has to be (and can only be) installed threw the iPhone.
Good luck and have fun being on a freed iPhone!

I just found your post. The only time I had my Iphone unlocked, I asked a friend to do it. It does not seem to be as difficult as I thought, so I think I might give it a try!
