Ever since having an iPhone, I’ve toyed with it installing with and that. But nothing have me as much as a headache as Summerboard. Why? Cause of the differenced in firmware and permissions, in older versions the user who controlled all the fun stuff was root (I think). But in later versions of the iPhone firmware it was ‘mobile’ AND the folders changed too.
I’ve written about possible manual solutions to this before, for some it worked for some it didn’t. Well, lately I almost created an iBrick ™. Thankfully it was a learning experience.
So how do you get things to work? Simple: Firmware 1.4.
Ok ok … that ‘might’ not be on the top of your want-to-do list. But hey, it works. Firmware 1.4 offers a few better things than the older firmwares AND there are many iPhone jailbreaking applications out there. Just pick an application that can Jailbreak and unlock the iPhone as well.
A couple steps that you should take before doing anything further:
- Backup all music, videos, mp3′s, contacts .. basically everything you want to save
- Hook up the iphone to a windows or mac machine with itunes
- Get iTunes to make a backup of your current setup and firmware (just in case)
- Fully charge iPhone (better safe then sorry)
Once you’re set to get firmware 1.4 … here is what I did to make sure everything was fine this time around:
- Restored iPhone to it’s original state
- I used iTunes to simply “Restore Iphone”. This WILL clear out the iphone and restore it to the first time iTunes backed up your iphone (not the same as the last time you synced the data)
- Reboot iphone and make sure it turns on and works
- Use iTunes to upgrade firmware
- After upgrade is successful
- Jailbreak and unlock iphone with your favorite tool
- Make sure your tool also installs “Installer” onto the iPhone.
- Install Summerboard
- Install BSD subsystem
- Install ssh access (openSSH or whatever SSH program you have listed in “Installer”)
- Jailbreak and unlock iphone with your favorite tool
- Enjoy a unlocked iPhone and fully working SummerBoard goodness.
P.S. I don’t take any responsibility if any of the above steps breaks your iPhone. Good luck and make sure you know what you are doing so that you don’t accidentally create a $600 paper weight.
