Facebook brought revolution to the social media market. It made things simple, clean, and efficient. Problem is, with some applications there are problems with spam.
Now this is not spam as in “Buy V1Agra”, but spam as in useless annoying news feeds posts that the applications make. These types of posts are automatically generated by these applications to let your friends. This can be interesting for a while or if you are actually interested in the application/game. Though, most of us are not. Plus, must of these are from applications like FarmVille and Mafia Wars (and the like) which have been dubbed: ScamVille. Their business practices are even publicly tauted as under-handed, immoral and possibly illegal.
But how to fix things on your end? Easy. There are two main ways to stop ever seeing those pesky ScamVille posts ever again on your wall/news feed. The first way is to “Hide” the posts (recommended first way) and the 2nd way is to have specialized Friends lists. I explain both below.
Hide the spam:
Once you hide the applications posts (or even people) you don’t want to see on your feed(s) you will happily never see them again. Doing this is very easy.
- First, locate the spam application you want to hide on your news feed. You can probably easily find them, but just to make sure, find them also by name. It will say something like this:

- Once you found the post, hover over the top right corner of that particular post area and you should see a “hide” button appear:

- Click it.
- It will ask you do you want to hide all of your friends posts/news or just the ScamVille stuff. I suggest just the spam:

- Enjoy being spam free!

Create very strict Friends Lists:
- Easiest way to create a friends list is to click on the “More” button under the left menu from the main page:

- Once the menu expands, click on “Create new list” at the bottom”:

- A new window pops up inside facebook:

- Where is says “Enter a Name”, enter the name of your new friends list. Something to describe your strict list, something like “Strict Friends Feed“.
- Click “Create List”.
From now on, instead of viewing the full feed, simply click on your new list and look at only that. If you use a program like TweetDeck (you can install it on Ubuntu x64 too!), you can now subscribe to only that list!
Freedom at last my friends! Any other tips or tricks to filter Facebook spam? Let us all know in the comments.

I have been gating mafia wars spam for a long time and want to thank you for sharing this easy yet effective tip.
Thank you so much for this! I had a couple of people in my friend list that I did not want to unfriend, but they were killing me with Farmville spam! Never knew that the Hide option had an option to block the app. Thanks!
No problem, my pleasure to help!
